We open the night off starting at 10:00 so if you’re in town make sure you get there early and clear yourself a circle on the dance floor!

Nuit Blanche

published by Dan on October 05th, 2008 in Event | No Comments

Last night Kent and I drank a bottle of wine that he stole from a wedding and then hit up downtown Toronto (like everyone else in the city) for Nuit Blanche.

Highlights:

  • The Common and the Tense (A Sound Ecology) by our friend and Producer, Byron Wong.
  • A gargantuan sized game of pong on one side of city hall with Space Invaders being played on the other.

Lowlights:

  • Drunken idiot kids on the subway.

Conferences, Concerts and After-Parties

published by Dan on June 17th, 2008 in Event | No Comments

We spent this year’s North By Northeast festival attending conferences, hanging out with rock stars and bouncing all over the city checking out bands. Of note were Winnipeg’s ‘Grand Analog’ as well as ‘Beast,’ a rock/electronica/rap group from Montreal whose bass player weilded a half bass half Micro Korg. Very cool. You can check them out at www.myspace.com/grandanalog and www.myspace.com/beastsound respectively.

Later in the weekend we got invited to the Much Music Video Awards after-party hosted by Perez Hilton. We mainly just chilled, mingled a bit and drank the free Heinekens. You can read Perez’s scoop on his blog here. Unfortunately Kent, who is a Perez addict, had to miss the festivities because he is too much of a good guy to call in sick.

The Junos

Last night Canada celebrated its music with our annual Juno Awards.

It didn’t take long for me to change the channel. After a couple half hearted ticket give-aways by Canadian Idol judges, interviews with bands who seemed to think they were too cool to be there, and a truly cringe-worthy introduction of “Russell Simmons” (the man’s name is Russell Peters) by Ben Mulroney I couldn’t take any more. I switched back once to see Feist take pop album of the year and again in time to view the back half of Finger Eleven’s performance of Paralyzer with the Calgary Youth Orchestra which was interesting enough, if not plagued by sub-par sound.

But I didn’t have to watch to know that Feist was going to clean house – 5 Junos in total. With American endorsement in the form of iPod commercials and Saturday Night Live appearances, aside from the fact that the accolades were much deserved, we needed to re-claim Canada’s Indie Darling as ours.
